👮‍♂️ Activists push back on controversial immigration application

Tom Sofield | Levittown Now

Bucks County Sheriff Fred Harran’s push to empower some deputies to enforce federal immigration law has generated backlash.

Harran has applied for his agency to enter a program where some members of his office would be granted authority to perform some immigration enforcement duties typically reserved for federal agents. Harran — a Republican seeking re-election — said he only intends for his officers to use the granted powers to determine the immigration status of people already in custody or those with outstanding warrants. He has vowed his deputies would not participate in immigration raids or sweeps.

The proposal has been met with community criticism, including a press conference last week outside the Bucks County Justice Center in Doylestown Borough hosted by several advocacy groups, including Immigrant Rights Action, NAACP Bucks County, Make the Road PA, CASA and the ACLU of Pennsylvania.

Critics allege membership in the 287(g) program with ICE would divert resources and make the county less safe by sowing fear and discouraging cooperation in immigrant communities; others say inevitable lawsuits tied to participation in the program would be a burden on taxpayers.

Harran has also had a recent dustup with Bucks County Commissioner Chairperson Bob Harvie. Harran, who is Jewish, alleged comments Harvie made referencing World War II and the Holocaust were directed at Harran. Harvie has denied the assertion. The comments came after public comments for and against Harran’s immigration application were made at a commissioner’s meeting.

🐶 Rescue Dog of the Week

James Short | Central Bucks Now

Meet Thelma, a nine-year-old Jack Russell Terrier currently being fostered through Home At Last Dog Rescue.

Thelma was rescued from a puppy mill in Lancaster. She is a highly motivated and loving girl looking for her forever home. She loves to curl up on your lap, eat treats and play with her toys, especially a tennis ball. Thelma is crate- and house-trained and does well with other older and submissive dogs. She would do great in just about any household however, she would do best with kids over 6.

If you are interested in adopting Thelma or would like more information, you can reach out to Home At Last Dog Rescue at [email protected] or visit the group's website.
